Tuesday News:

Northwestern will play 20 home games at Welsh-Ryan Arena this season. The Wildcats' full schedule was announced yesterday.

Will Venable may have been 0-4 at the plate in San Diego's extra inning loss to Arizona last night, but on Sunday Venable had two hits, including his eleventh home run of the season (video) as the Padres beat the Rockies 7-3.



Wednesday News:

Will Venable hit his 10th home run of the season (video), a solo shot to center in the top of the seventh inning, as San Diego came back to beat San Francisco, 4-3.

Lafayette announced their 2009-10 basketball schedule. In addition to a game at Princeton, the Leopards will visit Georgetown on November 28th.

Richmond has released the dates for their Atlantic 10 slate, completing their schedule for the upcoming season.

A 6'2" guard from western Pennsylvania who "also drew interest from Princeton" committed to Cornell.

While, as I said in that site's comments, I'm not sure how comfortable I am with my name being the focal point for this discussion - I think both this post and the Washington Post article I shared here that inspired it raise some interesting, important issues. Monday News:

Forward Konrad Wysocki has signed with the Polish team PGE Turow Zgorzelec of the Liga Koszykówki.

Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson spoke at Friday's Albany Beaver Huddle.

A decent weekend for Will Venable, who had two hits in the second inning on Friday night as the Padres scored six times versus Florida. Venable followed that up with a solo home run (video), his ninth of the season, in San Diego's 7-4 victory over the Marlins on Saturday. While his team was unable to pull of the sweep yesterday afternoon at Land Shark Stadium, Venable made another great diving catch (video) and raised his average to .274 with a pair of singles.

Cornell became the fifth Ivy League school to release their 2009-10 men's basketball schedule, joining Princeton, Brown, Harvard and Yale.

I was fortunate to receive another set of pictures this morning of Will Venable in Atlanta. Venable drove in San Diego's lone run last night with a home run to right center in the ninth inning (video), his eighth of the season.

Will Venable pictures.

A reader in Atlanta sent me some pictures they took of Will Venable from last night's Padres/Braves game. Venable was 0-5 at the plate in San Diego's 2-1 extra inning victory, but did make a nice rolling catch (video) in the fourth inning.

Monday News:

Will Venable was at the center of a bench-clearing incident during yesterday's game between the Padres and the St. Louis Cardinals. Venable grounded out to first baseman Albert Pujols and Pujols felt Venable gave him an elbow when Pujols tagged him out in the baseline. After the game, Venable considered the matter over. Pujols, not so much.

Gonzaga's Cedrick Lindsay has accepted an offer to play at Richmond. Lindsay's teammate Malcolm Lemmons is considering an offer from Princeton, among other Ivy schools.

Former Northwestern guard Craig Moore is blogging about his first year playing overseas for the Dutch team De Friesland Aris.



Sunday News:

An article from the Times Dispatch on the anatomy of the basketball schedule at Richmond gives readers a better idea of how hard it is to create and coordinate a full campaign.

Bill Bradley will be speaking at Cornell on September 10th as part of a panel called "Loves on the Run: Sports, Service and Leadership."

Did you miss the Will Venable full extension diving catch that was the Top Play on Friday night's Sportscenter? Watch video of the grab here. Venable also had a pair of doubles, his second career game with more than one extra base hit.

Last night Venable was one for three at the plate as San Diego was shut out by St. Louis, 7-0.

According to Paul Westphal, Pete Carril will be focusing on improving the Sacramento Kings' shooting.

Will Venable was picked off first base with the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning on Saturday, ending the Padres' hopes of rallying past St. Louis.

Will Venable drove in two runs for the Padres on Wednesday. Here's video of his RBI single to right that opened the scoring. Venable picked up two more base hits last night in San Diego's 9-2 loss at St. Louis.
