Wednesday News:

The relationship between Will Venable and his parents is the focus of an article on padres.com.

Venable's recent surge also earned him a profile in the San Diego Union Tribune.

Last night Venable hit a long home run to right field (video) as San Diego pasted Milwaukee 13-6. Venable added a two run single in the Padres' six run sixth inning.

It isn't all baseball news around these parts though. Word has broken on Princeton's first 2010 commitment. I spoke with his AAU coach last night for a profile that I hope to publish today. Just need to get a few quotes from his high school coach and you'll learn all about the first publicly-announced name of next year's freshman class.



Monday News:

Saturday News:

Will Venable drove in the game-tying run with a double in the bottom of the ninth (video), then scored the winning run on Everth Cabrera's grand slam as San Diego scored five times in the final frame to beat the Mets 6-2.

The Harvard basketball schedule has been released. The Crimson host Princeton on February 5th at 7:00 pm ET.



Thursday News:

Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson was a guest on the radio show Wheels at Work. Listen to the interview here (.mp3).

I read on CAAZone that incoming Princeton freshman Ian Hummer was playing for the Clyde's team in the Kenner League at Georgetown with Hoyas Jason Clark and Henry Sims, so I asked some regulars on the HoyaTalk message board to share their impressions of Hummer's game. Click on Hummer's name to see what they have to say.

Kareem Maddox scored eight points on 4-8 shooting in the final Hank's Big Time game of the Say No Classic's season. The team finished with a 4-4 record.

Chris Young may have missed 46 consecutive games due to his shoulder injury, but Padres manager Bud Black does not think surgery will be necessary.

Will Venable hit an opposite field solo home run (video) on Tuesday and followed that up with a two run shot to right (video) yesterday afternoon. Venable has gone deep five times in the last seven games and is hitting .481 during that stretch.

The good fortune continued for another member of Venable's family, as his younger brother Winston, who was frequently at Jadwin when his older brother was playing basketball, transferred to Boise State, where he hopes to succeed as a safety/linebacker hybrid.



Tuesday News:

Will Venable is on a tear. Venable picked up three more hits versus Atlanta and made a diving catch (video) in the seventh inning to protect a one run San Diego lead.

Over the weekend Venable hit his third home run in as many games (video) as the Padres bested Milwaukee 4-2. Venable is hitting .476 across his last five games and has raised his average this season to .254.

It doesn't look like Chris Young will be joining Venable on the Padres' active roster anytime soon. Young was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on July 31st.



Saturday News:

Will Venable hit his second opposite field home run (video) in as many days, helping San Diego rally past Milwaukee 11-7.

A sacrilegious quote from Pete Carril, yelled at some point during Bishop John Barres' playing days brought down the house when Barres recalled it during his ordination ceremony.

The New York Times profiles the new Director of the Ivy League, Robin Harris.

Yale has released its 2009-10 basketball schedule. The Bulldogs' game versus the Tigers in New Haven is scheduled to begin at 7:00 pm ET.



Friday News:

A big afternoon for Will Venable - Four hits, a three run home run and four runs batted in as San Diego defeated Cincinnati 7-4. It was Venable's second four hit game of the season. Watch highlights here.

Andy Katz talks with Georgetown coach John Thompson III about the Hoyas' 2009-10 schedule and the team's struggles last season.

If you're in Birmingham, Alabama on Thursday morning, Coach Thompson will be participating in The Coach Andrew A. Sewell Youth Basketball Clinic.

Princeton junior forward Kareem Maddox is playing in LA's Say No Classic Summer League. Maddox had 13 points and six rebounds for Hank's Big Time on the 17th.

At the ceremony yesterday where John Barres became the new Bishop of Allentown, Barres addressed Chris Thomforde and Coach Carril in his remarks.



Tuesday News:

Will Venable went 0-4 at the plate for San Diego last night in Cincinnati, lowering his batting average to .209.

Chris Young played catch yesterday without soreness, but his recovery from a shoulder inflammation is taking longer than planned.

ESPNChicago.com has a feature up on Oregon State coach Craig Robinson.

Robinson may be on the verge of signing a prized recruit, according to wildaboutazcats.com.

Some of the Princeton coaching staff was out recruiting at the Hoop City Classic in Kansas.



Friday News:

The dates for Princeton's two games against Penn have been announced. The Tigers will travel to the Palestra on Tuesday, February 16th and host the Quakers at Jadwin Gym on Tuesday, March 9th. See the full 2009-10 Princeton basketball schedule here.

Will Venable was 1-4 at the plate as the Padres began the back half of their season with a 10-1 loss to Colorado.

I received an advance copy yesterday of Kathy Orton's book "Outside the Limelight: Basketball in the Ivy League" and immediately read it cover-to-cover. The book, which chronicles the 2005-06 Ivy season, is worthwhile reading for anyone interested in Ivy League basketball. You can preorder using the link above. Monday News:

Will Venable finished the first half of the season on a strong note, picking up the first four hit game of his career and swatting his first home run of the season in San Diego's 10-4 win over San Francisco. Venable also scored four runs. After a terrible June that finished with a .156 batting average, Venable is batting .321 through 10 games in July and has pushed his average up to .233.

The United States Juniors team that Scott Greenman is coaching at the Maccabiah Games decimated Germany 96-18.

Sunday News:

On the third day of the NBA Summer League, Sacramento lost by three to Golden State in overtime. Above, Coach Carril assesses his team's play. Fanhouse writes about the odd couple of Carril and Kings point guard Tyreke Evans.

A large group of friends and family are on hand in San Francisco to watch Will Venable play against the Giants this weekend. Last night they saw Venable go 1-4 at the plate as the Padres were shut down for the third straight game.

Oregon State will visit UIC this season.

The United States won the gold medal over Greece at the FIBA U19 World Championship. It was the USA's first title in this tournament since 1991. Northwestern's John Shurna played seven minutes and scored one point in the finals.



Thursday News:

Will Venable was 2-3 with a double yesterday afternoon in Arizona. Venable is profiled in the latest Marin Independent Journal.

It looks like Chris Young may not be coming off the disabled list until August.

Georgetown will host Old Dominion on December 19th.

Northwestern sophomore John Shurna scored nine points for Team USA versus Lithuania in the FIBA U19 World Championships.

I haven't read the piece, and you need to be a subscriber to view the full article on-line, but Pete Hegseth is apparently quoted repeatedly in this week's New Yorker.
