As we hit the All-Star break, San Diego's Will Venable is slumping, hitting .091 in his last 10 games and down to .248 for the season. Venable has six home runs, 16 doubles and 21 RBIs as baseball pauses midway through the campaign.

Since returning from injury in June, Chris Young has started six games for the Mets. His 2-2 record disguises a 3.41 ERA. Young has pitched at least five innings in each of his starts.

After throwing six shutout innings against Philadelphia the last time out, Young was touched up for three runs in the seventh as the Phillies rallied past New York. Batters are hitting far better versus Young the third time through the lineup.

Pete Carril is part of the first class that will be inducted into the Reading High Athletic Hall of Fame.

Those in the DC area can watch Ian Hummer play at the Kenner League for Hoop Magic.

Hummer's Tigers are ranked 136th overall in the first 2012-13 team preview I've come across.

Friday News:

Unlike his last start versus the Yankees, where one pitch ruined his night, Chris Young (2-1) did not suffer a similar slip in the seventh inning against the Dodgers. Young allowed two earned runs on six hits while striking out six as the Mets defeated LA on the road 3-2.

Names like Georgetown's Hollis Thompson and Henry Sims (frozen by the top of Jay Bilas' Best Player Available list for most of the second round), Northwestern's John Shurna and Fairfield's Rakim Sanders were not called during last night's NBA Draft, but Oregon State's Jared Cunningham rose to 24th and was selected by Cleveland before being traded to Dallas.

Georgetown now knows their 18 Big East opponents for 2012-13. The Hoyas will travel to this area for games at Rutgers, St. John's and Villanova.

Judson Wallace knocked down a championship-sealing pair of free throws with a just over a second remaining as FC Barcelona defeated Real Madrid 73-69 in the deciding game of the ACB championship series.

Chris Young (1-1) likely deserved a better fate on Father's Day, taking a loss despite throwing seven innings versus the Reds during which he only allowed two earned runs. Young also drove in his team's first tally with a bases loaded walk (video). The Mets fell to Cincinnati 3-1.

Siena won the Lega A championship series in five games, perhaps ending the career of Mason Rocca with EA7 Emporio Armani Milano

He says he won't make a decision until March of next year, but a big man from the Los Angeles area mentions Princeton as one of five like-minded schools showing interest in him.

The Tigers are one of over 40 schools inquiring about a small forward from Georgia.

Another Georgian has a comparatively shorter (but still lengthy) school list that includes Princeton.

Chris Young picked up his first major league victory in over a year as the Mets rallied for an 11-2 win at Tampa. Young teetered in the first inning but recovered nicely, allowing his team to stay in the game. It was Young's 50th career W.

Princeton recruit Mike Washington Jr. picked up a significant honor at his high school and earned several scholarships for his collegiate education.



Tuesday News:

Will Venable returned from his oblique injury and promptly smacked three hits versus Milwaukee, including his fifth home run of the season to lead off the game.

It was pointed out to me that in the process Venable passed his father Max for most career hits in his family.

Coming off the "craziest 12 hours or 14 hours of my life," Chris Young takes to the mound for the Mets, this time in Tampa versus the Rays.

Judson Wallace scored a team-high 13 points for FC Barcelona in the third game of the ACB finals. Wallace's team trails Real Madrid 2-1.

His contract is up at the end of this season and apparently Virtus Bologna has interest in signing Mason Rocca. Siena is on the verge of sweeping Rocca's current team, EA7 Emporio Armani Milano, in the Lega A championship.

Princeton bestowed an honorary Doctor of Humanities degree to Pete Carril during yesterday's Commencement.

Far less momentous, but there's a brief, funny Carril anecdote in this piece on how social media has limited what contemporary coaches say and do.

It was an encouraging return to the major leagues for Chris Young. Making his first start in 13 months, Young allowed two earned runs on six hits in five innings for the Mets (75 pitches, 52 strikes), a small part of an odd 12 inning loss at Washington.

Will Venable is likely going to avoid the disabled list but remains out with a strained right oblique. Venable has been reunited with fellow Princetonian Ross Ohlendorf in San Diego.

The plan was originally for Chris Young to make two more starts for AAA Buffalo before returning to the major leagues, however Johan Santana requires extra rest following his no-hitter so Young will pitch for the Mets tomorrow night in Washington.

Racing out of the box on a ground ball, Will Venable strained his right oblique and had to leave yesterday's Padres game early.

Judson Wallace had nine points (including the game-sealing free throws) and nine rebounds as FC Barcelona advanced to the ACB finals versus Real Madrid. The best of five series begins on Wednesday.
