This post was originally penned in 2009 as "A Decade of Season Openers." I've added last season's game against Rutgers as part of an annual revamp for each upcoming season.

Many of these pieces come from the listserv that predated this web site.

Saturday News:

Former Princeton center Steve Goodrich is interviewed by the magazine connected to the camp he attended as a boy.

Oregon State expects a breakthrough season in 2011-12. Here's video of Craig Robinson at Pac-12 media day. The Beavers were picked eighth in the conference's preseason media poll.

CBS' Matt Norlander says Fairfield is loaded and ready for a huge year.

Georgetown has relaunched their DC Is Our Playground web site for the upcoming season. Hoyas head coach John Thompson III spoke yesterday as part of a panel series called "Think About It: An Afternoon of Ideas."

Will Venable now qualifies for Super Two status.

Tiger basketball recruit Mike Washington, Jr. had a touchdown catch in Oak Harbor's loss to Meadowdale.



Friday News:

Will Venable capped 2011 with his first career grand slam (video) as San Diego beat the Cubs 9-2. Venable hit .154 over his final 10 games of the year, lovering his season average to .246 with an on base percentage of .310. The former two sport Princeton star had 91 hits, nine home runs, 44 runs batted in and 28 stolen bases across 121 games. He dropped his strikeout total from 128 in 392 at bats last year to 92 strikeouts in 370 at bats for 2010.

Princeton is viewed as the fourth-strongest team in the New York area by Big Apple Buckets.

John Thompson III attended the Institute for the Advancement of Multicultural & Minority Medicine's annual gala. Thompson's wife Monica was honorary chair of this event.

A Minnesota point guard verbally committed to Harvard. Penn also added a big man to compliment their guard-heavy roster.

Former Princeton assistant and current Fairfield Director of Basketball Operations Martin Bahar is raising money for the 2011 Light The Night walk, which supports the The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Bahar's sister Madeleine suffered from plasma cell leukemia and passed away in 2009 at the age of 25. You can show your support for Maddie's Team by following this link.



Friday News:

Will Venable has been out for the last week+ due to an issue with his back.

It is unusual to see an article about a school offering a roster spot to a potential recruit, but there's indeed a piece about a forward from North Carolina and Princeton. Seeking clarification, I checked with the author to find out if said offer had been accepted. "No, not yet" was their response.

Quotes from Mitch Henderson show up in another story about how high school players can get noticed by college coaches.

Joe Scott was one of those taking advantage of a recent event where the Denver Nuggets opened their playbook to area college coaches.

Where does Georgetown fit in to the chaos of conference realignment?

Anyone with an interest in Ivy League basketball will want to keep an eye on Cambridge this weekend, with many impressive prospects visiting Harvard.

Friday News:

Cornell announced that due to Princeton's exam schedule, the Ivy League opener between the Big Red and the Tigers would be moved up two weeks.

This alteration is not unprecedented but it is also not common over recent seasons. The previous two times Princeton opened conference play before breaking for exams didn't work out well for the Tigers: Swept at Columbia and Cornell in 2007 and a split with Cornell and Columbia at Jadwin in 2006. Prior to that the orange and black bested both Harvard and Dartmouth on the road in January 2002.

Both Northwestern and Richmond have released their full 2011-12 schedules. Spiders head coach Chris Mooney was a recent guest at the Robins School of Business.

Will Venable made two significant plays in San Diego's 3-1 over San Francisco on Wednesday. Venable homered to open the first inning (video) off the head of an oblivious fan in right field and threw out a runner at the plate (video) to end the seventh inning.

Researching the field guide to Tigers in Europe I noticed that Kareem Maddox led his team in scoring during an exhibition and Pawel Buczak tallied 12 in his team's friendly with Dąbrowa Górnicza.

At the recommendation of Mitch Henderson, a British professional team has signed former Northwestern Wildcat Mike Capocci.

Sydney Johnson learned more about his new team during Fairfield's recent trip to Italy. Johnson is also the subject of a new piece up on Rivals.

The saga continues? Judson Wallace is trying to attain a Congolese passport so he can finalize his deal with Barcelona.

Thursday News:

Northwestern and Denver both announced their 2011-12 non-conference schedules.

The Pioneers will have Rob Lewis in uniform, as the forward was granted an extra season of eligibility after missing last year due to injury.

Georgetown won their final game in China and Fairfield rounded up their Italian tour with a 89-73 win against Fulgor Omegna.

The Stags are #43 in the Hoops Report Top 68 Team Previews.

Monday News:

Continuing to thrive after his demotion, Padres outfielder Will Venable led off yesterday's game with a home run (video) and ended the action with a walk off ninth inning single (video) as San Diego swept Florida, 4-3.

John Thompson III says last week's brawl is behind his team. After a day in Shanghai, the Hoyas easily defeated Liaoning, 91-69.

In Italy it was Fairfield with the 101-70 win over Forli. The Stags' Rakim Sanders had 35 points on 14-15 shooting, nearly equalled on the other side by former Georgetown standout Austin Freeman's 34.



Wednesday News:

Will Venable is the San Diego YPC's Young Professional of the Month.

As most were getting up on the east coast, Georgetown was playing their first exhibition in China, a 98-81 Hoyas victory over the Shanxi Brave Dragons. Vice President Joe Biden attended the game and spoke to the team in the locker room beforehand.

Not much to take away from Mitch Henderson's appearance on ESPNU, but my ears perked up a touch when he said some of the incoming Princeton freshmen will be "special for us."

John Thompson III and Sydney Johnson are both scheduled to be on with Andy Katz today at 5:00 pm ET.

I like what Fairfield is doing with the release of their 2011-12 non-conference schedule today. Each game will be revealed on the team's Twitter every 10 minutes starting at 1:00 pm ET with an exclusive discussion of the schedule following on the school's Facebook page.

A single, two doubles and a triple for Will Venable in last night's 9-5 San Diego victory over the Mets. Venable has a .419 batting average over the last 10 games, .362 in the last 30 days.

Mitch Henderson is featured in the new issue of US1.

Princeton has posted the Tigers' 2011-12 team roster. Expect more on this once heights and weights are updated.
