The John Thompson III Foundation is holding a toy drive.

Congratulations, Sean Gregory. You're Princeton Alumni Weekly's Tiger Of The Week.

Around the Ivy League: Harvard (4-3) fell in double overtime to Northeastern. Yale (2-6) lost 55-43 at Boston University.

Time Magazine - "The Best NCAA Upset"

In addition to the Oscar De La Hoya piece I posted yesterday, a number of other Sean Gregory videos have been posted on Time Magazine's YouTube page. The one-on-one with Lebron James package, I've linked to previously, but I had never seen the above interview with Coach Carril about the Princeton/UCLA game, full of still photos that were also new to these eyes.

Sean Gregory vs. Oscar De La Hoya.

Former Princeton basketball player and current Time Magazine writer Sean Gregory '98 visits Oscar De La Hoya for some boxing tips in advance of De La Hoya's December 6th bout against Manny Pacquiao.

Make sure to watch through the end credits...

Sunday News:

Chris Young makes his third post-injury start today at 3:05 pm ET in Colorado versus the Rockies.

Noah Savage returned from California just in time to score a team-best 17 points as George's/Ivy Inn won the deciding game three of the Princeton Summer League championship series.

Since I can't tell what is being broadcast when/where on the NBC family of networks, I'll avoid Olympic spoilers, but play-by-play for games involving Konrad Wysocki and David Blatt can be found here.

Also in China, Sean Gregory, who posts about the experience on the Ivies In China site.

Sean Gregory vs. LeBron James.

Former Princeton basketball player and current Time Magazine scribe Sean Gregory '98 conducted a recent sit-down interview with LeBron James that you can watch over on the Time site. Gregory and James also played a game of P-I-G that Gregory describes in greater detail on Henry Abbott's excellent TrueHoop blog.

Saturday News:

Jack Dempsey/AP

C. Young (2-1) - 7.0 IP 4 H 1 ER 0 BB 7 K 3.32 ERA. 101 pitches, 72 strikes. 1-3, RBI.

An aggressive, commanding performance by Chris Young in an 11-1 Padres victory.

"I had to get my confidence back" said Young. "I was out of sync in L.A. and their hitters made me pay for it. In L.A. I wasn't able to throw strikes. Tonight, I was."

Yesterday's news about the hiring of Sydney Johnson produced a number of articles, most of which used only the quotes and facts provided in the Princeton Athletic Department press release. Exceptions include the Daily Princetonian, who talked to former Tiger Sean Gregory '98 about Johnson, the Trenton Times and the Washington Post, who each provide brief quotes from Georgetown coach John Thompson III.

"It's going to be an unbelievable boon to the program," Gregory said. "When Sydney Johnson walks into your home and you're an 18-year old kid, it's going to make an impression."

"I'm ecstatic," said Thompson, who was an assistant at Princeton when Johnson played there. "As John Thompson, Princeton class of '88, this is a really exciting time."

Other articles: The Trentonian, Princeton Packet, Associated Press.

Finally, we head to Texas, where San Antonio dropped a 2-1 decision to Midland. Will Venable was 1-4 in the game.

Trailing by one point against Vanderbilt with seventeen seconds to play, Coach John Thompson went into the playbook and came up with a scheme that had worked before in a similar situation.

The play is called "Center/Forward."

Princeton ran it to knock off UCLA in the first round of the 1996 NCAA Tournament.

Last night Georgetown used it to defeat Vanderbilt 66-65 and advance to the NCAA East Regional Final on Sunday.

The Hoyas had executed the play out of a time out at the end of the first half and would have had an easy basket for Patrick Ewing Jr. if Ewing did not slip on the hardwood while driving to the iron.

It was Jeff Green, not Steve Goodrich, getting the ball on the right elbow with nine seconds left.

It was Patrick Ewing Jr,, not Gabe Lewullis, slashing to the basket before moving out on the arc, instructed by his coach to camp in the corner instead of cutting a second time on the baseline.

When Green could not find space to hit Ewing with a bounce pass, it was time to turn and go.

Green split a double team of oncoming Commodores and exploded above both men to kiss a shot high off the glass for the winning basket with two seconds remaining. Despite having two time outs in their pocket Vanderbilt rushed the ball inbounds and a desperation heave never made it to the rim.

The Hoyas poured onto the court, but it was Coach Thompson walking to the sidelines after doing an interview with CBS Sports to kiss his wife and wish his oldest daughter Morgan a happy ninth birthday.

I spent the game sitting next to former Princeton basketball player and current Time Magazine writer Sean “Bones” Gregory ‘98. When Georgetown called time down 65-64, Gregory turned to me and said with a knowing grin - “Center/Forward.”

After the game, as Gregory and I caught up with Coach Thompson for a brief interview in the hallway outside of the Georgetown locker room, his first words to us were: “Bones, didn’t you think Center/Forward was going to work?”

Did 1996 have something to do with this call? “If you want me to say that, I’ll say it for you” Thompson responded slyly.
