Awards Banquet.

Princeton held its annual awards banquet in the lobby of Jadwin Gym tonight.

The worthy recipients of honors at the 2011-2012 banquet included:

Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award - Mack Darrow.
B.F. Bunn Trophy - Doug Davis.
Friedman Memorial Award Trophy - John Comfort.

Davis and Ian Hummer were also recognized for their All-Ivy status.

It was easily the shortest banquet on record. Not having Marvin Bressler as the MC anymore and all three seniors being fairly quiet in public will speed a night crisply along.

The fact this event was held on what would have been Bressler's birthday was a nice, purely accidental touch.

Pete Carril was asked to introduce the Friedman award and recalled the story behind the man this plaque is named after.

John Comfort (who said his thesis was due tomorrow), Patrick Saunders (who was recently admitted to the University of Vermont pre-Med program) and Doug Davis each gave brief remarks after the full team was called up to receive their varsity letters.

It was personally heartwarming to hear head coach Mitch Henderson single out my father's photo of Ian Hummer's dunk versus Cornell from the dais.

All the food looked great. Wish it hadn't been Passover!

A few photos follow after the jump.

Princeton held its awards banquet in the lobby of Jadwin Gym tonight.

The worthy recipients of honors at the 2010-2011 banquet included:

Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award - Kareem Maddox.
B.F. Bunn Trophy - Dan Mavraides & Kareem Maddox.
Friedman Memorial Award Trophy - Dan Mavraides.

It was the second straight year that Maddox took home the Bob Rock Award and the second straight year where Mavraides heard his name called for the Friedman Award.

All three seniors gave excellent speeches full of genuine laughs and honest emotion as they recalled the journey from a 6-23 freshman season to the 2011 Ivy title.

I was personally extremely honored to be thanked by each of these guys. That's worth saying publicly.

Princeton held its awards banquet at Jadwin Gym tonight.

The worthy recipients of honors at the 2009-2010 banquet included:

Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award - Kareem Maddox.
B.F. Bunn Trophy - Dan Mavraides & Marcus Schroeder.
Friedman Memorial Award Trophy - Nick Lake.

Douglas Davis and Mavraides also received special recognition from Coach Johnson.

My wife described the banquet experience perfectly midway through the evening, when she turned to me and whispered that she wished this event happened at the beginning of the year, because it made her extremely motivated and excited for a season we all must now wait six months for.

The four seniors gave quiet, touching speeches, with Lake and Schroeder capping an emotional night that ran longer than anticipated, but as Coach Johnson said - this is the last time this group is going to be together as a team, so the coaching staff was in no rush to move on.

Each senior was given a CBI shirt, an orange and black tie and a framed photograph of the scoreboard from the end of the Duquesne/Princeton game.

It remains an honor to attend this event, one of my favorite evenings of the year, even though I will not be able to look at Nick Lake again without thinking of either Robert Patrick or James Hellwig.

Princeton held its awards banquet at Jadwin Gym tonight.

The worthy recipients of honors at the 2008-2009 banquet included:

Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award - Patrick Saunders.
B.F. Bunn Trophy - Pawel Buczak.
Friedman Memorial Award Trophy - Marcus Schroeder.
Guardian of the Program - Vernon Bugg.

The night set the perfect tone for the end of the season and the start of the work that needs to be put in for greater success next season, with goodnatured jibes delivered between players and coaches and a pair of funny, touching speeches by seniors Jason Briggs and Michael Strittmatter.

On a personal note, it is always an honor to attend this event, and I confess I got a tear in my eye when Coach Johnson announced that Marcus Schroeder was the recipient of the Friedman Award.

Princeton held its awards banquet at Jadwin Gym tonight.

The worthy recipients of honors at the 2007-2008 banquet included:

Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award - Jason Briggs*.
B.F. Bunn Trophy - Kyle Koncz & Noah Savage.
Friedman Memorial Award Trophy - Nick Lake.

The banquet is a appropriate epilogue for each season, regardless of results. This year's remarks from the five seniors, especially Noah Savage's mix of impressions and funny personal anecdotes left a lasting final memory of the class of 2008.

I did not get a chance to take a group photo of the seniors before the end of the night, so the above snapshot of Marcus Schroeder and Nick Lake listening intently to Coach Carril's words will have to do.

If anyone who was taking photos would like me to post them, I would not stop you from sending them my way. Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments.

Jon

* Without hopefully embarrassing anyone, I thought it was exceptionally classy of Briggs to go over to Bob Rock's widow and thank her and her family personally after receiving this award.

The worthy recipients of honors at the 2006-2007 banquet included:

Class of 1959 Bob Rock Sixth Man Award - Edwin Buffmire.
B.F. Bunn Trophy - Kyle Koncz.
Friedman Memorial Award Trophy - Justin Conway.

The heartfelt speeches by the three seniors and the good feelings that came from seeing so many people who care about Princeton basketball in the same room made for a meaningful end to the season and created many positive feelings as a new chapter of Tiger basketball is about to begin.

A new head coach was not introduced.
