Around the Ivy League: Harvard (11-6 / 3-0) stayed unbeaten in the league but continues to play with fire. Yale (7-13 / 1-2) could not get off a chance to tie in the final seconds at Lavietes Pavilion, falling 67-64. Even entering the last :45, Penn (4-15 / 1-1) outscored Columbia (9-8 / 1-2) by four to record a 62-58 decision. Rafael Maia had 21 on 10-11 shooting as Brown (8-9 / 2-1) topped Dartmouth (4-13 / 0-2) by 12.

Congratulations to Sydney Johnson, who earned his 100th career win as a head coach when Fairfield (12-10) defeated St. Peter's 61-54 in MAACtion.

Richmond (13-8) went down at UMass, 70-65.

Juve Caserta picked up a win over Vanoli Cremona in Lega A with Dan Mavraides scoring nine off the bench.

A player I must admit I was unfamiliar with who tried to walk on at Princeton departed the school after a year on the J.V. and now plays for Clarion University.



Friday News:

Bragging rights in Hoopstown USA went dramatically to Richmond (13-7) last night. The Spiders rallied from down seven with :39 left in regulation, including a three pointer right before the buzzer that sent their game against #16 VCU into overtime. Chris Mooney's team then outscored the Rams 17-5 during the extra frame.

Sydney Johnson picked up his 99th career victory as Fairfield (11-10) easily defeated Marist, 71-37.

Princeton recruit Steven Cook was named MVP of the J-Hawk Martin Luther King Shootout.



Thursday News:

Since their dismal performance against Iowa, Northwestern (12-8) has been playing some inspired basketball. Facing a third straight ranked team, the Wildcats befuddled Minnesota, taking control with an 18-4 second half run on their way to a 55-48 triumph.

Denver (11-7) did not fair well at New Mexico State, shooting 3-18 from three point range in a hard-to-watch 53-42 loss.

A 74-66 decision over Washington gave Oregon State (11-8) their first Pac-12 victory of the campaign.

Ian Hummer cracked the Top 100 in StatSheet's national player rankings.

There's a feature on Kareem Maddox in advance of Newcastle's trip to Birmingham.

Tonight it is the Black & Blue classic wherein Richmond and VCU will face off. Fairfield will also host Marist.

Around the Ivy League: Penn (3-15) led as late as the 5:25 mark of the second half versus Temple until an 11-0 Owls run sealed the Quakers' fate.

In case you missed it, the above screencap of Craig Robinson behind President Obama went viral yesterday. Robinson also spoke to The Grio in advance of the inauguration.

There's the "can beat anyone, can lose to anyone" cliche and then there's Georgetown (13-4). 48 hours after going down at cellar-dwelling South Florida, the Hoyas went on an 18-0 second half run to glide past Notre Dame on the Irish's floor. ND had won 47 of their prior 49 home games.

Fairfield (10-10) lost their fifth straight, 65-60 to Loyola (Md.)

Make it six straight for Denver (10-7), who beat San Jose State by 36.

UCLA kept Oregon State (10-7) winless in Pac-12 play, 74-64.

Princeton recruit Spencer Weisz is a nominee for the 2013 McDonald's All American Game.

Future Tiger Amir Bell and East Brunswick improved to 11-0 with a second victory over St. Joseph.

It sounds like Hashim Moore had another strong defensive performance for the Hun School.

The Town Topics reviews Princeton's win over Penn.

Eight points, eight rebounds and six assists from Judson Wallace in FC Barcelona Regal's latest Euroleague triumph, including a pair of fourth quarter three pointers to put the result away.

Around the Ivy League: Despite 26 turnovers, Penn (3-13) ended their eight game losing streak by surviving 54-53 at NJIT. Dartmouth (4-11) bested Colby-Sawyer, 80-42.

Mercer (14-4) defeated Camden 60-59 last night. Mustafa El-Amin scored 21 including the game winning three point shot.

The defense of Princeton recruit Hashim Moore was a big part of Hun's victory over PDS.

Big Apple Buckets has a special Ivy League basketball podcast up that I recommend listening to and additionally spoke with Sydney Johnson about Fairfield's three game losing streak.

A senior in high school who attended Princeton's summer camp will play his collegiate ball on the Division III level.

Georgetown hosts Providence. The Hoyas will be without second leading scorer/rebounder Greg Whittington, suspended for a second straight game due to a violation of team rules.

Additionally, Richmond visits #13 Butler.
