Will Venable went 1-5 as San Antonio defeated Springfield 6-2 in the first game of the Texas League Championship. Game two is tonight at Nelson W. Wolff Stadium.

Monday News:

Chris Young shook off a rough three run first inning before settling back closer to his pre-injury form. Young struck out the side in his fifth and final inning. The Padres pulled within 3-2 in the top of the eighth, but a double play left the tying run on third.

"I was better today than I've been," Young said. "There were a couple of times when I lost mechanics, but I felt like I threw the ball well. I don't evaluate on results. I threw the ball better today than my results [show]."



Sunday News:

Chris Young and the San Diego Padres take on Colorado this afternoon at 3:05 pm ET in Denver. The Padres trail Arizona by two games in the NL West and lead Los Angeles by 2.5 games for the National League wild card playoff spot.



Saturday News:

Will Venable was 2-4 at the plate and twice drove in a runner with two outs as San Antonio shut out Frisco 5-0 to advance to the Texas League championship series, which starts Tuesday at home against Springfield. Several quotes from a jubilant Venable can be found here.

Congratulations to Princeton Associate Athletic Director Jerry Price for winning Story of the Year in the College Sports Information Directors of America Fred S. Stabley Writing Contest. Price was honored for his January piece "Welcome home, Coach Carril."

Friday News:

Will Venable was 3-5 for San Antonio as the Missions took the second game of their best-of-five with Frisco 6-1. The Missions have three chances to eliminate the RoughRiders this weekend.

Some players on the Princeton recruiting radar: 6-5 John Carrol guard Mike Maczko will take a visit to Princeton. 6-10 forward Greg Mangano from Notre Dame-West Haven has Princeton as one of five finalists for his services. Another big man, 6-10 Emerson Kampen from Indiana says Princeton and IPFW currently top his list.

"I really like those two at this moment," Kampen said. "I wouldn't say I've narrowed it down to just those two, but I really like those two a lot."



Thursday News:

San Antonio scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to rally past Frisco 5-3 in the first game of their Texas League playoff series. Will Venable was 0-3 at the plate. The two teams meet again this evening. Venable is also the feature of a profile in this week's Town Topics.

Chris Young is "status quo" for Sunday's start in Colorado against the Rockies.

Chris Young allowed two early home runs, including a fourth of the season to Tony Clark, as the Padres dropped the middle game of their series with Arizona 9-1.

"It's frustrating because I don't want it to take too long. ... Maybe my expectations have been too high," Young said. "I'm not as consistent with my location. My mechanics get out of sync and it's hard to work on it between starts. I know I can be better."

Tuesday News:

The Padres lead Arizona by a single game in the NL West. The two teams meet tonight with Chris Young facing off against the Diamondbacks' Doug Davis. First pitch is at 9:40 pm ET.

Will Venable and the San Antonio Missions wrapped up regular season play yesterday with a 6-4 win over Corpus Christi. Venable was 0-4 on the day, finishing the schedule with a .278 average, 19 doubles, eight home runs and 21 stolen bases. The Missions (73-66, 42-27 in the second half) will face Frisco in the first round of the Texas League playoffs starting Wednesday night at the RoughRiders' ballpark.

The 1971-72 Union College men's basketball team has been named to the school's Athletics Hall of Fame as a “Team of Distinction." This team was coached by current Princeton athletic director Gary Walters and had former Princeton coach Bill Carmody on the roster.



Saturday News:

Will Venable and the San Antonio Missions have clinched a spot in the Texas League playoffs.

According to Padres manager Bud Black, Chris Young is experiencing "normal soreness" after his start on Thursday.

Richmond senior center Drew Crank will not be a member of Chris Mooney's 2007-08 Spiders team.
