Princeton continues to look for the elusive 40 minute game.
"We've had some games where we're right in the mix and whether it is execution on the defensive end and the offensive end" said Tiger head coach Sydney Johnson following Princeton's 67-56 loss to Yale. "We just haven't seized the moment."
Trailing by five points with seven minutes to go, Yale went on a 12-0 run and the Bulldogs finished Friday night's game with a 22-6 rally. "I don't think it is lack of desire" Johnson observed, trying to explain how his team had let the lead slip away. "We just have fallen short consistently."
"We have lapses" bemused senior co-captain Kyle Koncz stated after the game. "We're making the same mistakes over and over again. We're losing guys in the zone. We're not talking."
Koncz scored 12 points and added a career-best 11 rebounds for Princeton. Center Zach Finley also had 12 of his own in defeat.
Yale's Nick Holmes paced four Bulldogs in double figures with 18 points. Travis Pinick scored 11 and grabbed 11 boards while Ross Morin and Caleb Holmes each had 10.
Princeton head coach Sydney Johnson and princetonbasketball.com editor Jon Solomon met at Jadwin Gym right before practice on Thursday to review Princeton's trip to New York State and Tuesday's game at Penn. This interview is 11:00+ in length.
Five times in the second half of the 217th meeting between Princeton and Penn the Tigers had possession with a shot to take the lead.
Five times the Quakers held on.
The last of these chances came with just nine seconds on the clock and Princeton down 64-63, as an open three point shot by senior co-captain Noah Savage on the left wing was long off the mark.
Following offsetting technical fouls assessed to Zach Finley and Brian Grandieri after the rebound, Remy Cofield made two free throws to boost the Penn advantage to three. As Princeton looked to inbound and pull even for the first time since midway through the first half, Savage was whistled for an intentional technical foul as he elbowed Jack Eggleston beyond midcourt before the ball ever came into play. Savage, now disqualified, headed to the bench with his head down, aware he had cost his team a chance at overtime.
It was one of 52 whistles in a foul-plagued 70-65 struggle between two teams that haven't had much fortune this season.
Kevin Egee's 15 points led four Quakers in double figures. Also breaking out of single digits were Aron Cohen with 14 and the freshman duo of Eggleston and Remy Cofield who both tallied 11.
Zach Finley was one of four Tigers in double figures, scoring 15 points. Kevin Steuerer added 13 while Savage and Lincoln Gunn each contributed 12.

princetonbasketball.com was founded on April 28th, 1998 in an attempt to provide fans of the Princeton Tigers and Ivy League basketball with the best on-line source for up-to-date news and information. We have since expanded to launch a companion site, Georgetown Basketball News.
As these sites have continued to grow we have increased our coverage to include additional teams with Princeton connections - the Richmond Spiders, Denver Pioneers, Oregon State Beavers, Fairfield Stags and Mercer County Community College Vikings - plus former Tigers playing professional baseball and basketball all over the world. This site is not directly affiliated with the Friends of Princeton Basketball, Princeton University or the Princeton athletic department.
