Friday News:

Harvard vs. Dartmouth - 7:00 pm ET

The Princeton Packet and the Daily Princetonian file reports on the Lafayette game.

The Trenton Times' Mark Eckel has a column on Princeton's struggles this season.

For the past three years Princeton has shared an NCAA record they wish they didn't hold - fewest total points in a game in the shot clock era. Last night Saint Louis scored 20 points in a loss to George Washington, making the Billikens the current record holder in a season where new lows in offensive productivity appear to be happening every week.

How about Alex Wolff's Vermont Frost Heaves, who improved to 17-3 with a 107-99 win over Halifax. The Frost Heaves made 15 of their 30 three point attempts.

Around the Ivy League: Cornell (7-5) had no trouble with Division III Alvernia, 91-46.

As we leave the pre-conference period and head toward the Ivy season , I
took a look at this years Ivy versus Patriot League match-ups.Ivy teams lost
11games against the Patriot teams and won 7 games. In games between pre-season high ranked teams Holy Cross beat Yale and Buckinell beat Cornell.

Lafayette which just overcame the Tigers also beat Penn and Columbia. Lafayette in one pre-season prediction was thought to rank middle of the pack
in its league.

Is Patriot League stronger than Ivy this year?

Joseph,

The Patriot League is actually just behind the Ivy League in the current conference-by-conference RPI. Ivy is 22nd, Patriot is 23rd.

There are players on several Patriot teams that Princeton coaches wanted to come play for them.

Scholarships now being available at each Patriot school has made it easier for PL teams to compete with Penn and Princeton for recruits.

Given the fact that Princeton now uses its endowment to help middle and lower income students with tuition, is the scholarship issue that important anymore?

I think the scholarship issue is important because there's a huge difference between being able to lock in a free ride 18 months before you go to a school versus making a non-binding verbal agreement that then will have the financial details ironed out as you wait for your "likely letter" and all other steps that may lead to eventual admission.
