Wednesday News:

Ohio State vs. Northwestern - 9:00 pm ET - Big Ten Network

There's no shortage of Princeton / Penn articles. Let's start with the local links - goprincetontigers.com, the Trenton Times, the Trentonian, the Trentonian Basketball Blog, the Associated Press and the Daily Princetonian.

From parts south - pennathletics.com, the Inquirer, the Daily News and the Chester Local.

The Daily Pennsylvanian has three stories - focusing on the Princeton / Penn rivalry, the Quakers' success at the free throw line and the game's many whistles.

Mason Rocca has turned down an offer from Lottomatica and will stay in Naples.

Northwestern hosts Ohio State in Evanston.

The refs made a travesty of the whole game--52 personals called in the 40 minute game--and mysterious technicals, too, in the final half-minute!
As if that wasn't a good enouigh way to ruin everyone's evening, the radio team was also out of control. While game was being played, there was no play-by-play while they discussed history of previous seasons,, etc etc etc. Meanwhile, somebody scored or somebody was fouled by whom --and we never got the missing details. Trying to keep a score sheet was impossible and my individual scoring totals were off for everyone but Savage when i got the official box score and could check it out.

The whistles made the game difficult to watch, but I persevered.

It seems like the Tigers play two different styles of offense, depending on whether Finley is in the game or not.

With Finley in, the play begins with him out high. He screens for the guard, then rolls to the basket. Once down low, he moves back and forth in the low post, looking for the ball. The remaining four players tend to be relatively static.

When Finley is on the bench, the offens looks much more like what I am used to from Princeton, with more perimeter ball movement and player motion.

I am encouraged by Finley's improved play. I would love to see him add a 10-15 foot jump shot to his regimen, and I wish he could finnish stronger. Also, it would be great if he could draw more contact around the rim, but his foul shooting is the problem in this regard.

After his horrible 1-12 stretch at the line, Finley has gone 6-9 from the stripe in the last three games. Certainly a small sample size, but if Finley could just be, as Coach Johnson said, an above-average free throw shooter, this would force defenses to react differently.

Referring back to the comment on fouls called at the Paleastra,I watched the
game on CN 8. It is rather rare for TV play by play comentators to continuosly
be critical of the officiating, but like most people watching, they want a game with flow and an opportunity for the players to make plays and decide the outcome. This wasn't a lopsided case like the first Columbia v. Cornell game where The Big Red went to the Free Throw Stripe 20 times to the Lion's 5 times (if memory serves). The Penn Bench had every reason to grit its teeth over the quick whistles as did equally the Tigers Bench.

I recognize that Coach and the Tiger players are too classy to protest. As a fan I thought the officiatiing as the saying goes "sucked"

How can Princeton expect to win when it consistently goes to the foul line less than half as much as its opponents? Princeton had a higher shooting percentage than Penn but gave Penn 35 foul shots. Princeton had 21 foul shots but only made 14 to Penn's 31. Is this just poor defense? Princeton will not start winning games until this disparity is rectified. Why does the Penn basketball u site have thousands of posts to Princeton's 200 hundred and something? Where are the fans? We need to support this team and this coach. Jadwin is becoming a graveyard. At the Seton Hall game, the student section (the best seats) had about 25 students in them. We will never get quality opponents to come here if we do not support the team. More importanly, recruits will not want to play here if the fan base is apathetic. Penn is 7-14 and gets 7,000 at the Palestra to watch 5-14 Princeton on a terrible night. Are Penn fans just more passionate about basketball than Princeton fans? We all need to wake up and support this team or else we can expect mediocrity at best for years to come.

David,

I love Jake Wilson like a brother-in-basketball-arms, but I'm not sure "number of posts on Basketball U" is the best metric of a team's fan support.

Jon,

Posts on basketball u may not be an accurate measure of fan support but where are all the fans on this site. What about attendance? Other than you and a few other die hards (me on occasion), how many fans travel? Do any of these students follow this team on the road or at home for that matter? At most Ivy away games that Penn plays there are as many Penn fans there as there are fans for the host team. I suspect, sadly, that this might be the case this year when Penn comes to Jadwin.

David,

Penn has the advantage of more alums and more students than Princeton - creating a larger pool of potential fans.

Princeton certainly does have a problem building and sustaining a younger fan base. There are very few students on the road. When I go to the Friends of Princeton Basketball event at Reunions, I am often the youngest person there by 20+ years.

Did think the Tiger turnout at Columbia was quite strong and I'm sure Bob Ruxin will get a few hundred fans at Harvard.

Hard to believe that 3 games over the weekend were marred by terrible ref calls at the end of the game: Besides the Princeton-Penn game when the refs took away the chance for P'ton to tie at the end, the refs made a terrible call at the end of the G'town game against Villanova when the refs called a foul against Villanova when Wallace was at the far end of the floor with 0.1 left on the clock and the score tied. Rutgers must still be furious about their women getting robbed against #1 Tennessee when the final 0.2 seconds on the clock was proven by replays to have consumed 1.3 seconds, and yet the refs did nothing about the hometown clock controller causing the outcome! What a shame to have refs take over a game in general but particularly galling when they make terrible calls during the last few seconds.
On another topic, I'd like to echo someone else's complaint about our radio announcers on our website sometimes getting away from descriptions of what is going on in the game and instead chattering away about previous games, etc. Particularly on the radio, we listeners are interested only in play-by-play descriptions, and we want constant repetitions of the score, time left on the game clock and shot clock, and numbers of fouls on those in the game or sitting out due to foul trouble (much more important than the amount of points scored, rebs gathered, etc.).
