I was surprised that Cornell got destroyed. Has the quality of the league dropped off or was Stanford just that good? The thing I have loved most about Princeton basketball over the years is that we have competed well in the post-season tournaments. Even in seasons when we lost three or four games in the league, we took national powers to the wire in the tournament. Penn fans probably will disagree but outside of 1979 Princeton has been the best Ivy post season representative. Can the Ivy League compete again like we did in the 70s, 80s and 90s? Or should we expect 30 point losses in the first round?
Yes, I think that a single incidence of a blowout by the Ivy League champion indicates that this will be the case every year from now on. Because there is no better way to identify a trend than by drawing a line through a single data point.
Stanford turned out to be a horrible match-up for Cornell and some of the Big Red's key pieces did some very out-of-character things on Thursday. It was clear size was going to be a factor going into this game, but I don't think anyone expected a team that was Top 10 in the nation in FG%, 3FG% and FT% to struggle like the Big Red did in the first half (they made just 15% of their field goals).
Both Penn and Princeton have had second half leads against single digit opponents in 21st century NCAA games, including the Quakers just last year, so hopefully 30 point losses for Ivy champs are the exception, not the rule.

I don't want to sound like sour grapes, but I'm not surprised. It's all relative and you really can't argue that the league is fairly weak this season compared to years past no matter how you try to spin statistics. Does anyone here really think that this Cornell team would have won a championship in the 90s let alone gone undefeated? I don't. This year's version of Cornell reminds me of the Dartmouth teams of the mid 90s wiith Lonergan (SP?), Buth, MacGinnis and Gee. A decent team team that could never beat the Ps. You could make a pretty good case that that Dartmouth team was better. With a years experience, maybe next year will be different. Assuming Cornell repeats.
